Bedevilments of the Disease

This is taken from Page 52 in the Big Book.  It is a list of common bedevilments we experience as alcoholics / addicts.  The motivation is to seek “God-sufficiency” over self-sufficiency to be rid of them:

~ We were having trouble with personal relationships

~ We couldn’t control our emotional natures

~ We were a prey to misery and depression

~ We couldn’t make a living

~ We had a feeling of uselessness

~ We were full of fear

~ We were unhappy

~ We couldn’t seem to be of real help to other people

  1. “Liking” this seems weird, but I did. I am new to blogging, but not to recovery. I like your approach to sharing the message. Every time I sit down to wirte a blog post I want to focus on the mess. LOL

    • Thank-you for like and the visit, I do appreciate it the feedback.

In over thirty years in recovery, I’ve chased these bedevilments out of my life, only to find that slowly I invite them back in again. Recovery is like the lottery, “You gotta be in it, to win it.” The solution for getting rid of these things is the same on the the 100th try as it was on the 1st go around. In a nutshell it’s: Get back in the Steps or get drunk.

We discussed the reading that contains the word “bedevilments” this morning at a meeting. I did a bit of research to find out its meaning and then found your blog in further research. It would seem the very definition of the word is found in the words from the book.
