Things I need to Remember when I Sponsor…
1. I am not their Higher Power.
2. I do this so that I can stay clean and/or sober.
3. Recovery is not for those who need it, but for those who want it.
4. If the sponsee is willing to go to any lengths, you will not have to spoon-feed them.
5. If the sponsee is not willing to go to any lengths, my efforts will be of little benefit.
6. The disease struggles in the face of consequences, and thrives in the protective embrace of codependency.
7. I am a guide through the steps based on my own experience. I am not a professional counselor or religous guru. I am just me.
8. When things are going right with my sponsees, it doesn’t mean that I have done something right.
9. When things are going bad with my sponsees, it doesn’t mean that I have done something wrong.

Heard recently while listening to a speaker MP3: My job as a sponsor is to take the hand of this woman and place it in her higher power’s hand. Then I use my experience to guide that relationship, nothing more.

And I do that, of course, by showing her how I was taken through the steps.
